Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common inherited heart disorder affecting anyone regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. The reported prevalence of HCM in the general population is about 1 in 500 people. It is a disease in which the heart muscle (myocardium) becomes abnormally thick (hypertrophied). The thickening usually occurs in the ventricular septum which is the area of the heart that separates the right side from the left side of the heart. It may interfere with normal heart function by narrowing the outflow of blood from the heart.
