Movement disorders program

The Spectrum Health Medical Group Movement Disorders Program offers patient-centered, comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for—and the highest level of medical and surgical expertise to—patients with movement disorders. Fellowship-trained neurologists; a functional neurosurgeon who specializes in deep brain stimulation; psychiatrists; neuropsychologists; and physical, occupational and speech therapists—all work together to find solutions that result in optimal outcomes and improved quality of life for each patient.

Diagnostic capabilities

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Electromyogram (EMG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) to physiologically characterize abnormal movements
  • DaTSCAN™ which can help identify dopamine cell loss
  • Neuropsychological testing

Treatment options

  • Botulinum neurotoxin (Botox) injections for dystonia, drooling, hemifacial spasms, and tremor with the option of using EMG guidance
  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS): patient selection, surgical placement and post-operative programming; traditional “awake” as well as “asleep” (also known as interventional MRI-guided DBS) approaches
  • Duopa (levodopa intestinal infusion therapy): patient selection, surgical placement, post-operative programming
  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapy: therapy treatment for Parkinson’s disease, including dysphagia; therapists certified in LSVT BIG and LOUD treatment protocols
